Social, Emotional and Mental Health

At Two Bridges Academy, social, emotional and mental health is embedded throughout our curriculum.

Across all 3 pathways, explorer, discovery and adventure, the emotional wellbeing of pupils is at the very heart of all learning.

The subject areas within our SEMH curriculum that are formally taught are:

Personal, Social and Health Education

(PSHE)

Relationship and Sex Education

(RSE)

Spiritual, Moral, Social, Cultural

(SMSC)

British Values

This is delivered through an adapted version of the Jigsaw curriculum . It covers a broad range of topics relevant to the chronological and cognitive developmental stages of the learners including:

·  Mental health and wellbeing

·  Hopes and fears, including personal goals

·  Friendships and conflict

·  Relationships & Sex Education (RSE)

·  Online safety

·  Life cycles, growth and change

Opportunities to learn about the importance of British values and to further develop pupils’ awareness, understanding and develop skills in relation to SMSC, are weaved throughout our SEMH curriculum. This includes through assemblies and planned activities that relate to local, national and global celebrations and events.

British values underpin what it is to be a British citizen in a modern and diverse Britain, as well as  promoting moral and cultural understanding that celebrates the diversity of the UK.

We are also very fortunate to have access to other services that also support our pupils' social, emotional and mental health through various interventions.

PSHE

At Two Bridges Academy, Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) is taught as part of our SEMH curriculum. Our curriculum enables pupils to rehearse and embed the practical skills and understanding needed to lead fulfilling lives and enjoy safe and healthy relationships.

We have spent a significant amount of time creating an adapted version of the Jigsaw PSHE programme to plan and deliver fully inclusive, inspiring and highly engaging PSHE and RSE lessons

Being Me in My World

Celebrating Difference

Dreams and Goals

Healthy Me

Relationships

Changing Me

All Jigsaw lessons are delivered with the careful consideration of age, cognitive and physical development and emotional maturity, enabling teachers to meet each pupil’s individual needs. Inclusion and enrichment opportunities also contribute to SEMH education, as they provide safe spaces for pupils to apply and generalise their learning in a range of contexts.

As we use a whole school approach to PSHE/RSHE, lessons are delivered using the same structure in every class, enabling pupils to anticipate and correctly identify each section of the lesson.

RSE

Relationships and Sex Education play an important role within the curriculum and school life. We teach RSE as part of our whole school PSHE curriculum whilst respecting faiths, beliefs and contexts of our pupil’s families, engaging with parents and carers throughout. This is also known and often referred to as RSHE (Relationships, Sex and Health Education).

The teaching of Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) is a statutory requirement in all schools and at Two Bridges Academy, all lessons are carefully differentiated to ensure meaningful and appropriate learning is taking place across all curriculum pathways.

Below is an example of topic areas that pupils will cover some or all of:

People and families that care for me

Caring and respectful relationships

Coping positively with puberty

Online relationships and being safe

Online relationships and being safe

Conflict resolution
